What are IATA codes?

IATA stands for the International Air Transport Association.  The association publishes a list of 3-letter codes for airports worldwide.  For example, the IATA code for New York's Kennedy Airport is JFK.  It also maintains a list of 2-letter airline designators.  For example, the IATA code for Singapore Airlines is SQ.  While IATA codes are not available for all airports, they are available for every major international and domestic airport in the world.
