What is a type C electrical socket and plug?

Type "C" electrical sockets are familiar to most people as being designed to fit the Europlug. The socket casings are often not flush and generally provide a circular or hexagonal indentation to better secure plugs in their sockets. Plugs consist of elongated, round prongs of equal length. Unlike North American plugs, it's common for only the ends of the plugs to be metal and the remainder to be plastic. Because the sockets are ungrounded and unpolarized, they are generally discouraged and being phased out. However, because the plug that fits type C sockets also fits types E, F, J, K and L, the plug (often referred to as the Europlug) is the world's most common.
