What is a type D electrical socket and plug?

Type "D" electrical sockets are familiar to those who have visited India. Originally a common electrical plug in Britain prior to 1962, type "D" sockets are often flush and so require the large girth of their prongs to better secure plugs in their sockets. Plugs consist of two thick, round prongs to supply power and a third, even larger, prong to provide grounding. Like North American plugs, it's common for the prongs to be completely made of metal. Plug and socket casings need not be round and are often found to be more rectangular. In part because of this, it's important to distinguish between type "D" sockets and the even larger type "M" sockets that are also used in India for some large appliances.
