What is a type L electrical socket and plug?

Type "L" electrical sockets are found mostly in Italy and occasionally in North Africa. They are very similar to type "C" sockets except that they have an additional hole for a grounding prong at the midpoint between the two type "C" holes. Plugs consist of three elongated, round prongs of equal length. Type "L" sockets do fit ungrounded type "C" plugs, generally referred to as Europlugs. Because of the positioning of the prongs, plugs can be inserted upside-down and thus must be unpolarized. While the similarities between type "L" and "J" plugs are apparent, the positioning of their prongs makes them otherwise incompatible.
