What is a type M electrical socket and plug? Type
"M" electrical sockets are used almost exclusively in southern Africa.
They bear a very strong resemblence to type "D"
sockets but are even larger. Because type "M" outlets are often flush, they use the large girth of their prongs
to
secure plugs in their sockets. Plugs consist of two thick, round
prongs to supply power and a third, even larger, prong to provide
grounding. Plug and socket casings need
not be square and are often found in other shapes. In part
because of this, it's important to distinguish between type "M" sockets
and the slightly smaller type "D" sockets used in India. However, some type "M" sockets are able to accept both type "M" and type "D" plugs.
