What is the China's Shenzhen Zone?Shenzhen is an area of China bordering Hong Kong that was designated as a Special
Economic Zone. The Zone was established in 1980 to encourage
economic growth and foreign investment, to great effect. More liberal entry requirements than the rest of mainland China were also instituted to encourage
cross-border trade and cooperation with Hong Kong. Because prices tend to be less than in Hong Kong, Shenzhen has also become
a popular day trip and weekend destination for shopping and dining by Hong Kong locals. However, foreigners usually need to get a visa for mainland China, often from their home countries, in order to enter Shenzhen. last updated 2008.08.25
