Which organizations are responsible for airline and airport codes?

The IATA and the ICAO are responsible for maintaining separate sets of codes for airlines and airports.  IATA stands for the International Air Transport Association and maintains a list of codes generally used for flight reservations and travel planning using commercial aviation.  ICAO stands for the International Civil Aviation Organization and is the United Nations' agency for civil, as compared with military, aviation.  Its lists of codes for airports and airlines are more extensive and typically used by air traffic controllers and pilots for flight planning and in-flight communications.
